Making Tax Digital Income Tax (MTD IT)

From April 2026, HMRC will introduce one of the most significant changes to personal tax reporting in recent years. Individuals who run their own self-employed businesses or own property in their personal name will see a fundamental transformation in how their income is recorded and reported for tax purposes.

This new system, known as Making Tax Digital (MTD), forms a central part of HMRC’s ambitious Digital Transformation Programme. It represents a decisive move away from traditional self-assessment methods toward a fully digital tax environment, where financial records and reporting will increasingly take place in real time through HMRC’s evolving Gov.UK platform.

For many taxpayers and business owners, the implications will be substantial. Record-keeping processes, reporting schedules, and compliance requirements are all set to change — making early awareness and preparation essential.
